WCHS publishes Engquist book 'Scandia, Then and Now'
The Washington County Historical Society has reprinted Anna Engquist’s book, Scandia, Then and Now.
The original book published in 1974 is a compendium of pioneer life in the Scandia area.
Having gone through several editions, the book was out of print, but it has been such a popular publication that the historical society thought it well worth republishing.
Dick Johnson, co-author of Pioneers of the Big Lake Community, spearheaded the effort to redo the book.
Some new material has been added, including the new City of Scandia Mayor and City Council.
Judy Rydeen authored a new chapter that captured the history of New Scandia Township and contains a list of the town board chairs through the years.
There are updated photos of Hay Lake School, Gammelgarden, Elim Lutheran Church, and many more. There are more photos from around the area, more people, school children and stores.
The new edition also includes a helpful index and a new cover with the same Swedish blue that Mrs. Engquist used in the very first edition.
The book can be purchased for $25 at the Washington County Historical Society’s Hay Lake Museum starting in May or at the Warden’s House Museum now in Stillwater.
It also can be purchased through the mail by sending $25 for the book and $3 shipping to: Washington County Historical Society, PO Box 167, Stillwater, Minnesota 55082.
