Relay members in the community
Relay Members in the Community is a feature the Forest Lake Times will offer on a monthly basis. The short feature will put a face to the cancer disease.
Every person featured in these articles will have been affected by cancer in some way. These are not fictional people that are used as advertisements, these people live and work with the community on a daily basis. They are your neighbors, friends and family.
This week the Times is featuring the Yaeger family. Rayna, and her mom Andrea, decided to donate their long hair to two organizations that make wigs for children and adults who have lost their hair due to the treatment involved with cancer.
Rayna, 9, donated her hair to Locks of Love, an organization that makes wigs for children suffering from hair loss due to cancer treatment side effects. Rayna grew her hair out to 10 inches and had it cut by the stylists at Fantastic Sams in Forest Lake.
“I just wanted to help other children,” Rayna said.
Andrea, also grew her hair out and donated 8 inches to Beautiful Lengths.
Beautiful Lengths is a lesser known organization that takes donated hair from adults and makes it into wigs for adults. This organization only requires a donation of eight inches of hair, instead of the 10 inches required by Locks of Love.
One of the events in this year’s Relay For Life program is an on-stage hair cutting for Locks for Love.
Nancy Rosman, coordinator for the event, has been encouraging people to start growing their hair out now in hopes of it being long enough to be donated.
