Scholarship honors retired band leader Nelson

A scholarship given to students in the Mounds View school district will honor the work of Rollin Nelson, the retired Forest Lake High School music teacher and band leader.

This spring, two students will receive the first Rollin Nelson Student Incentive Award. The scholarship will recognize students who attend Mounds View or Irondale high schools.

Two $500 scholarships will be given in Nelson’s name by the Shoreview Northern Lights Varsity Band.

Nelson, who lives in Wyoming, has been a member of the community band for the past 10 years. The scholarships were announced at the band’s recent Benson Great Hall Spring Concert at Bethel College in Arden Hills.

“Other than being flattered by the honor, I hope my many years of satisfying enjoyment in music will help these students realize the same goal,” Nelson said.

Nelson spent many years at the head of the Forest Lake High School band program. In retirement, he has remained active with the community band in Shoreview and as a director of the Forest Lake City Marching Band.
