County receives funding to fight homelessness

Washington County is inviting community partners and interested parties to participate in a funding program to end chronic homelessness. The county has been notified that $104,000, with an additional $15,600 (Good Samaritan bonus) is available from the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance (SuperNOFA) funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Applications for new or renewal project funding are being discussed with applicants. Potential applicants need to contact the CoC by May 4. Final and complete applications must be submitted to HUD by May 25, after competitive ranking that decides which projects have been selected for submission. The goal of the funding is to end chronic homelessness by the year 2012. To reach this goal, HUD has designated that 2007 appropriations support housing initiatives which serve persons experiencing chronic homelessness prior to entering the program. HUD requires that the Washington County Housing Collaborative/Continuum of Care have a strategy for ending chronic homelessness that is performance-based, goal oriented, and includes specific action steps. HUD requires the CoC describe the coordination taking place, and to document “working partnerships” in communities as they develop and implement prevention strategies to help end chronic homelessness.
