$11,000 now in Legion 4th of July kitty

The drive to raise $34,000 in public contributions to fund the annual Fourth of July celebration in Forest Lake is just shy of having one-third of the total in hand.

Barb Olson, American Legion Post 225 parade chair, said on Monday the drive has collected $11,000 of the funds needed to cover the Post 225’s expense for the parade and fireworks on July 4.

Olson said the three-day garage sale at the Legion last week netted $1082 for the fund. Donations are being raised through a variety of events, including the sale of flag photos at $1 each which are signed with the buyer’s name and posted in the business where purchased. The flag photos are available at businesses throughout the area, Olson said.

The Legion will soon begin contacting area businesses seeking parade sponsorships and donations to support the community celebration. The annual Fourth of July button sale is also under way with proceeds going to the celebration. The $1 buttons are available at the Legion.

Post 225 will have its “Let Freedom Ring” celebration this Saturday featuring a smelt fry starting at 5 p.m. and served until gone. All proceeds will benefit the Fourth of July fund. Cost is $6 a plate.
