1st time homebuyer program OK’d
The Washington County Board of Commissioners May 1 approved the issuance of bonds to support a financial assistance program for first-time homebuyers. The Washington County Housing and Redevelopment Authority is expanding its service to first time homebuyers by offering financial assistance such as lower interest mortgage rates and a downpayment assistance program. Education for first-time homebuyers is also a part of the program. WCHRA Deputy Director Rich Malloy told the board that “Probably the most common call we get in our office is “Do you have first-time homebuyer assistance. This allows us to expand our services in the area,” he said. Previously, the county had been a part of a state-run first-time homebuyer financial assistance program. Washington County is now joining other counties in offering its own program. Malloy said the county was at no risk from the loans, which would be made through responsible and experienced vendors. The program is expected to get underway this summer. For more information call 651-458-0936 or go to www.wchra.com.
