Letter carriers will collect food Saturday
For the 15th consecutive year on Saturday, letter carriers from the Forest Lake Post Office will collect food for donation to area food shelves.
The event is part of the national food drive sponsored by the U.S. Postal Service Food Drive and the National Association of Letter Carriers. The event is billed as the largest one-day food drive in the nation.
Local letter carriers will join the effort to help top the total of 70.5 million pounds of food collected in the 2006 drive. Some 1500 post offices serving 10,000 communities will take part.
Area residents wishing to take part in the food drive on May 12 are asked to leave non-perishable donations — such as canned meat, fish and soup, cereals, pasta and rice — in a bag near their mailbox.
Donations will be picked up by letter carriers on all routes and delivered to local food shelves.
Donations collected in Forest Lake will be shared with the Community Helping Hand and Family Pathways food shelf programs, said Dan Stark, Forest Lake Postmaster.
