The Forest Lake girls golf team had one Suburban East Conference meet last week, and then hosted the Forest Lake Invite on Monday, May 7.
The trend of seeing the girls struggle a bit carried over from late April, which has allowed Woodbury to pull even in the conference standings.
“We’re dead-tied with Woodbury right now, and Mounds View is two or three (points) back,” Rangers head coach Joel Hall said. “So I think it’s going to be pretty exciting all the way through.”
On Friday, May 4, the girls were in St. Paul at Highland National, and they came away with a third place finish.
The team ended with a total score of 179, placing them six shots behind the winner, Mounds View, and five behind Woodbury.
“We need to play a little bit better, just as a whole,” Hall stated. “If everybody comes down two shots on average we’re going to be just fine.”
The real bright spot for Forest Lake was Betsy Kelly, who won the medalist honor after a round of 37.
Filling out the rest of the scores were Mallory Messin (46), Nicole Tetrault (47), Brittany Seifert (49), Laurel Pelton (49), and Emily Wislicenus (53).
“We struggled a little bit last week, again. I don’t know if they’re putting pressure on themselves to play well because it’s conference, or what the issue is, but I have faith in them,” Hall said.
MONDAY'S RESULTS
Forest Lake entered its own invitational as the defending champion against virtually the same 18-team field, and after shooting a 356, they can keep the hardware as the top squad.
Kelly was the lead Ranger with a round of 85, which put her in fifth place overall.
She was followed by Wislicenus, who shot 89, and then Messin and Tetrault each finished with 91.
Wislicenus was 15 shots lower than last year’s number, and Messin knocked nine shots from her round in 2006.
Completing Forest Lake’s scoring were Laurel Pelton with an even 100, and Katie Nowicki at 117.
The Rangers were in Red Wing on Tuesday, May 8, and then at Park on Thursday and Stillwater on Monday, May 14.
