Students at Century thank area veterans
Local veterans are being thanked for their military service in an extra special way this year — with blankets, cards and letters from students at Century Junior High.
“We’re making blankets for the veterans because we want to thank them,” said Courtney Zebro, a Century ninth grader.
“We’re giving them presents because we are thanking them for putting their lives on the line for us.”
As part of a community service project eighth and ninth graders were asked to “Give a Buck for a Vet.” Money raised was used to purchase material to make fleece blankets for the local veterans of VFW Post 4210.
Students made 50 blankets for the veterans, and another seven blankets were made for Century staff members who served in the armed forces.
The blankets, along with thank you cards and letters from the teens, were delivered to the VFW in time for Veterans Day.
The Century students raised more than $1345 — much higher than the original goal of $650.
Student Council members will donate the remaining $400 to the American Legion, on behalf of the student body, during the school’s Veterans Day assembly on Thursday, Nov. 15.
