Police chase down man after cigarettes are stolen
Police in Forest Lake early Thursday morning chased down a man who allegedly stole three cartons of cigarettes from a local store. Police were called to the Holiday Station Store, 1208 W. Broadway Ave., at 1:10 a.m. where a man had taken three cartons of cigarettes and left the store without paying. A store employee followed the man on foot south to the area of Applebee's where police joined the incident. The man continued to flee on foot but was caught by a Forest Lake officer after a short foot pursuit. Police said the three cartons of cigarettes were recovered and returned to the store. The man, 20-year-old Anthony J. Haugley of North Branch, was taken to the detox unit in Hastings and will be charged with misdemeanor theft, shoplifting, police said.
