No meeting to discuss fireworks
A change of heart has led Forest Lake City Council members to cancel a planned work session on Monday, Nov. 26 to discuss city participation with the fireworks display during the 2008 American Legion Post 225 Fourth of July celebration. The Legion has asked the city to help fund the event. It was clear Monday night, however, that the council is luke warm on any long-term commitment and wants the celebration funding to remain in the hands of the Legion and the community. “I’d just as soon not have another meeting,” said Council member Greg Ochs. Council member Susan Young said she was concerned with the city’s commitment should it agree to sign a contract hiring a vendor to shoot the fireworks. “I want more community buy-in,” said Council member Judy Bull. Mayor Stev Stegner said it was clear the Legion was asking for help because its crew that has shot the fireworks could no longer do the job. Ochs said the city might consider some financial help once the Legion has a plan in place. He cautioned, however, that should the city take over the funding, it would be a signal to the community that it doesn’t need to get involved. City Administrator Chip Robinson will update the council during the regular meeting Nov. 26.
