Osceola Duathlon on Sunday

The Osceola Duathlon is scheduled for Sunday, October 14 starting at 8:30 a.m. at Oakey Park in downtown Osceola. Held in conjunction with the event is the 5K Run/Walk starting at approximately 9 a.m., and the Kids’ Duathlon at 11 a.m. Athletes and spectators can take in several aspects of Wisconsin’s beauty from the St. Croix River in Polk County to the quaint downtown neighborhoods. Enjoy the colors this peak fall color weekend has to offer. The Osceola Duathlon boasts very achievable distances; a 3-mile run, 22-mile bike, and a 1-mile run and kicks off at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14. Local community members, businesses and corporations are encouraged to participate individually or as a two- or three-person relay team. All participants receive a shirt, goody bag and food and fun after the event. FLBA board meeting October 14

The Forest Lake Area Schools-Community Education Youth Athletics Program is holding a basketball registration night on Tuesday, Oct. 23 from 7 - 8 p.m. at each of the district elementary schools as well as St. Peters and Lakes International. Participants may also register online at www.communityed4u.org, or by calling 651-982-8110. The registration deadline is Friday, Nov. 2. The elementary basketball program is open to girls and boys in grades 3 – 6. Last year there were about 700 participants in the program. Practices begin the week of November 19 and games run from December 6 through February 25. WIAC honors Katie Anderson

Forest Lake High School graduate Katie Anderson (Class of '05) was named a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athlete of the Week for her achievements on the University of Wisconsin at River Falls tennis team. A four-year letter winner and two-year captain at FLHS, Anderson plays both doubles and singles and has a record of 9-2 in doubles action, with three wins in three matches during the week of Sept. 24. Anderson is one of two captains this season for the Falcons.

William O'Brien spooktacular

Join the folks at the William O’Brien State Park Visitor Center on Saturday, Oct. 20 for its annual Community Halloween Party. The evening will start at 6:30 p.m. with costume and pumpkin judging. All ages are urged to participate. Bring your pre-carved or painted pumpkin to the park. Prizes will be given. After the judging, head out for a night hike of spooktacular style. Learn what happens in the park after the sun goes down. After the hike, stay for a special program from professional storyteller, Dwight Wilcox. He will share some “tall” and “short” campfire tales that you will be sure to enjoy. Top off the evening with a marshmallow roast outside by the campfire. Come for part or all of the evening’s activities. There is no registration, but if you would like more information, please call the park Visitor Center at 651-433-0500, ext. 227. The programs are free, but a State Park Vehicle Permit is needed to enter any of Minnesota’s beautiful State Parks. This program is being sponsored by the Friend’s Group of William O’Brien.

BESA Site-In Days in Hugo

The Bald Eagle Sportsmen’s Association (BESA) is hosting its annual Site-In Days every Saturday and Sunday through October 28, and weekdays Oct. 22-26. It is open to youth, adult members and nonmembers (youth must be accompanied by an adult). BESA allows rifles, shotguns (slugs only), handguns and muzzle loaders during the site-in. Included are 25-, 50- and 100-yard covered ranges. Cost is $8 for the first gun and $6 for each additional gun.

Dates and times are as follows:

Saturdays 10 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Sundays 12 to 5 p.m.

September 29 and 30, October 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21.

Monday, Oct. 22 through Friday, Oct. 26, the range is open from 10 a.m. to dusk.

Deer population discussion on Oct. 23 at Gander Mountain

The Chronic wasting disease — its transmission and risk to humans — as well as current trends in Minnesota’s whitetail deer population and future herd management are the topics of a discussion session and public forum at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23 at Gander Mountain in Forest Lake. Speakers will include Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Big Game Coordinator Lou Cornicelli and Wildlife Health Program Coordinator Michelle Carstensen. The sessions are free and open to the public although reservations are suggested as seating is limited. Call 612-624-9050 for reservations. Martini Bongo Bash for new Forest Lake Sports Complex

Shine your shoes, grab a fedora and mingle to the swingin’ sounds of Ol’ Blue Eyes at the Martini Bongo Bash at Forest Hills Saturday, Oct. 27, starting at 7 p.m. The public event is a fundraiser for the Sports Complex being built by the Forest Lake Area Athletic Association (FLAAA). Cost is $25 per person, which includes Clayton’s Atomic Appetizers and one free martini or soda. The evening will feature ’50s and ’60s lounge music, a silent auction with sports, Rat Pack memorabilia and discounted martinis in several flavors. Dress is resort casual or vintage cocktail attire. Professional women's hockey

The Chisago Lakes Kitten Club is hosting the Professional Women’s Hockey team, the Minnesota Whitecaps at the Chisago Lakes Arena on Oct. 28 at 1 p.m. The Kitten Club is a non-profit non-registered mentorship program that works to empower young girls through the sport of hockey. All proceeds from the event go back to helping develop and promote the Kitten Club. Ticket prices are $8 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.
