'Dance Your Heart Out' Saturday

Join the Forest Lake dance team at the Seventh Annual Dance Your Heart Out Clinic Fundraiser. The clinic is for children ages Pre-K to 8th grade and runs 9 a.m. - noon on Saturday, Sept. 15 at Forest Lake High School. The show will follow at 12:30 p.m. On Friday, Sept. 21, dancers should arrive at 6:30 p.m. at the FLHS gym. The kids will perform at halftime of the varsity football game. FL Hoops Club Basketball Tryouts

The Forest Lake Hoops Club will be holding free basketball tryouts for their competitive traveling teams in both A and B levels. Tryouts for girls in grades five through nine will be held the week of September 17. Skilled fourth graders are also invited to tryout for the teams. The competitive traveling season will run from late October to mid March and roughly nine to 12 tournaments are expected throughout the season. The cost for each tournament is $20. Fairview's concussion workshop

Getting tackled in football or shoved into the boards during hockey is part of the game, but it can give players more than a headache. Football, hockey and soccer players and others are at high risk for concussion. On Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m., Fairview Sports & Orthopedic Care will offer a free Concussion Prevention and Treatment Workshop for both parents and coaches in Conference Room B at Fairview Lakes Medical Center in Wyoming. During the workshop, participants will learn about common signs and symptoms of concussion, treatment, the latest in return-to-play guidelines and how you can help prevent concussion in athletes. Speaker for the evening will be sports medicine physician Kevin Ronneberg, M.D. The event is free, but participants are asked to preregister by calling 612-672-7272.

Olheiser wins world time trial

After winning cycling's 2006 Masters World Time Trial Championship in Austria, Forest Lake High School graduate Mike Olheiser recently made the return trip in order to defend his title. Beating out 60 other riders from around the world, Olheiser took the title for the second consecutive year. He also competed in the road race and finished in sixth place.

Alumni Night at Ranger football

The Ranger football game against Woodbury on Friday, Sept. 21 will have a couple of extra events. Forest Lake High School graduates are encouraged to attend Alumni Night so they can be recognized at halftime. After the game the alums are invited to gather at Dummys Bar & Grill. There will also be a Pass, Punt & Kick competition, where a raffle will select one participant to pass and punt their way down the field and then attempt a field goal. A successful kick would bring the lucky person a Ford F-150, courtesy of Forest Lake Ford.

Master swim workouts

Southwest Jr. High is the site of swimming with a purpose, for fun, fitness and faster times. Time: 10:15-11:30 a.m., and the cost is $6.00 per session. Objective: To provide athletes of all abilities and ages with a workout to improve or maintain their cardiovascular fitness. By following a quality workout a swimmer will move easier and more efficiently through the water thus being able to go farther and faster. What to Expect: The swimming workout sessions will be approximately 2000-3000 yards including base, threshold and sprinting. Workouts will be adjusted to the ability of the swimmers. Dates: every first and third Sunday of each month, except September and October. Sept. 23; Oct. 21, 28; Nov. 4, 18; Dec. 2, 16; Jan. 6, 20; Feb. 3, 17.

* swimmer’s need to be able to swim a continuous 50 yards of either the freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke or butterfly stroke.

Bike, Walk n' Roll on Sept. 29

The Fairview Lakes Auxiliary invites cyclists, in-line skaters, walkers and entire families to join them in their annual “Bike, Walk ‘n’ Roll” fundraising event on Saturday, Sept. 29, at Fairview Lakes Medical Center in Wyoming. Participants may choose from one of three options including a new family event:

A scenic community walk of approximately three miles near Fairview Lakes Medical Center.

Bike, walk or roll along the beautiful Sunrise Prairie Trail for a distance of up to 26 miles round trip (Wyoming to North Branch and back).

Take the new family walk from Fairview Lakes Medical Center to the Wyoming Dairy queen (.9 miles one way) with several stops for activities and treats along the way.

Proceeds of this annual outing go to the Leah Hillesheim Health Care Scholarship, which each year awards scholarships to worthy students in the community who are entering a medical field. No pledges are required. Participants who register before Sept. 22 pay $12 for adults and $8 for children 12-and-under. A family/group of four participating in the Family Walk pays $20 plus $3 for each additional member. Each family group must include at least one person age 16 or older. Participants should check in one-half hour before their chosen event. Cyclists and in-line skaters start at 9 a.m., walkers at 9:15 a.m. and the family/group event at 9:30 a.m. Helmets are mandatory for cyclists and in-line skaters and will be available for sale at $7 each on the day of the event. Each participant must complete a registration form. To register, pick up registration forms at the Fairview Lakes Medical Center information desk in Wyoming, all Fairview Lakes clinic, Forest Lake Cycle and Skate, Trail Cycle and Yellow Bus in Forest Lake.

Kickboxing pro-am at Hinckley

A pro-am kickboxing event featuring a world kickboxing championship fight will be held at the Grand Casino Hinckley Events & Convention Center on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m. The event will feature United States Boxing Champion Heath Fonnest from North Branch, Minnesota, against Stacey Gosden from England. Admission prices for the Saturday night bouts are $55 for ringside seats, $35 for VIP, and $25 for general seating. Sunrise Bassmasters’ for YSB

The 19th Annual Sunrise Bassmasters Bass Tournament benefitting Lakes Area Youth Service Bureau will take place on North/South Center Lakes in Lindstrom on Sunday, Sept. 30 from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. Rules: Two person teams. Five-fish limit with 12 inch minimum size. Entry Fee: $80 ($60/prize money and $20/expenses and donation). Registration, sign-in take off and weigh in will be at Hillcrest RV Park, 32741 N Lakes Trail, Lindstrom, on the northwest corner of North Center Lake. Youth Fishing Day - On Saturday, Sept. 29, the Sunrise Bassmasters are sponsoring their annual Youth Fishing Day from 8 a.m. to noon for youth age 12-17. Both boys and girls are welcome to participate. This is a free event but pre-registration is required as space is limited to the first 16 youth to call YSB, 651-464-3685. Rods, tackle and snacks are provided. Prizes will be awarded!
