FL school property tax levy going up

It's still not final, but it appears the 2007 levy for property taxes collected in 2008 will be going up in the Forest Lake Area School District. The school board has voted unanimously to approve a preliminary tax levy of $16,331,987 to be collected in 2008.
The proposed total levy would increase next by $1,929,937 or 13.4 percent from the $14,402,050 that is on the books now if the school board adopts the full amount in December following the required Truth in Taxation public hearings.

The bulk of the increase comes in the district's general fund. Under the proposed levy approved by the board, the general fund increase is $1,932,966, or 20.5 percent. The actual general fund levy payable in 2007 is $9,452,054. Under the proposal, the levy payable in 2008 would jump to $11,385,020 in the general fund. In addition, more than $1 million -- $1,084,208 -- falls under prior year adjustments, with $618,281 of that total new levy dollars payable in 2008. More than $1 million of funding is provided for Q Comp funding to cover district obligations for the teacher alternative pay plan in the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 school years.
