Chisago County levy may jump 14.03%
A property tax levy showing a 14.03 percent gross increase could be in the works for Chisago County for 2008. The Chisago County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 5 voted 3-2 to approve a preliminary gross levy of $31.35 million following a series of budget work sessions. More action and discussion on the 2008 budget and property tax levy is expected before the items are up for final approval in December. The decision on Sept. 5 came after a proposal by Commissioner Mike Robinson was rejected. He proposed a series of budget cuts and a plan to draw $1.12 million from county reserves to soften the property tax impact. The vote to adopt the preliminary levy was approved behind votes from Commissioners Ben Montzka, Bob Gustafson and Rick Greene. Commissioners Robinson and Lynn Schultz were opposed. The county board may lower the proposed levy at a later but can not increase the figure.
