Snoball coming to FLake Fest next month
Team registration period is now open
Has the balmy winter given you the itch to get outdoors? Are you already dreaming of grabbing a ball and glove and playing catch?
If so, the Forest Lake Area Athletic Association has just the remedy. The local sports organization is planning the inaugural “Snoball” softball tournament to be played on the ice of Forest Lake in conjunction with next month’s FLake Festival.
Besides curing the winter blues, FLAAA designed the event to drum up interest in the adult softball league it is starting in the spring.
“There’s a ton of softball interest within the Forest Lake and Chisago Lakes area and all around,” said FLAAA adult programming coordinator Kathy Graen. “I thought this would be a great kickoff.”
The tournament is scheduled for the weekend of Feb. 25-26 and will be held just off Lakeside Memorial Park. Teams will be co-ed and will be guaranteed three games. Players must be at least 16 years of age.
Play will follow normal softball rules. A 16-inch ball will be used. Graen advises players to use broomball shoes or to pull socks over boots, as spikes are not allowed.
The tournament may include night games under the lights, but those details have yet to be finalized.
Register online at www.flaaa.org before Feb. 17. Entry is $195 per team, and cash prizes will go to the top teams. The event will raise funds for maintenance and improvements at the Fenway Athletic Park fields.
