Forest Lake Dance Team finished a great Suburban East Conference season by winning its first SEC title Monday night. The host Rangers, who topped the standings heading into the final of three SEC meets, clinched the overall championship by winning both the kick and jazz competitions on Monday.

To top it off, the Rangers won both of the meets’ JV categories and Cheryl Smoczyk earned SEC Coach of the Year honors.

Forest Lake earned first-place rankings from each judge for their NASCAR-themed kick routine, which followed what Smoczyk called a “near perfect” jazz routine.

Ashley Moore, Rachel Rue, Angela Nesler, Ali Clasen and Jackie Ohman won all-conference honors, while Shaley Bagan and Hannah Quiggle were honorable mention picks.

Next up is the Feb. 11 sectionals, with a field even more loaded than that of the SEC.

“It is a hard message to sell to your team that they need to be perfect,” said Smoczyk. “I actually don’t believe in that, but it is the reality of section qualifiers that we need to be perfect to advance to state.”
