Nordic boys win section; girls edged by Stillwater

As expected, Wednesday’s Section 4 nordic skiing meet came down to the wire. The Rangers boys celebrated a narrow win over Stillwater, but the girls were edged by the Ponies.

Forest Lake will return as a team to the boys’ state meet next Thursday after one year away. They took second at state in 2010 and won the title four times in five years from 2005-09.

At the section meet at Trollhaugen, the Rangers totaled 385 points and edged Stillwater by three. Joe Jackson finished in 25:11 and won by nearly a full minute. Teammate Alex Kelley held off Stillwater’s top finisher to place second. Jacob Jankowski finished sixth and Tommy Babcock 10th.

The girls trailed after the morning classical race and were unable to make up ground, despite Rocci Wohlk placing first overall in 28:36. Wohlk, Cassie Thobe (fourth) and Holly Winberg (11th) will join the boys at the state meet as individual qualifiers. Kate Schaaf placed 15th and just missed the cut.

Stillwater finished with 381 points, eight ahead of the Rangers.
