Morgan clears hurdle at state wrestling; Pleskis still in contention

Forest Lake senior Ben Morgan has cleared his main hurdle on his quest for a second state wrestling championship. He beat Apple Valley’s Dakota Trom 7-2 in Friday night’s quarterfinals. Morgan is ranked No. 1 in the state at 132 pounds, and Trom is No. 2. Morgan faces Phillip Horsager (17-7), a senior from Spring Lake Park in this morning’s semifinals. A win would put him in the championship round set for 7:30 tonight at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

James and Michael Pleski remain alive despite losing their second matches yesterday. At 113, James fell 3-1 in triple overtime to Prior Lake junior Tanner Johnshoy. He then bounced back to beat Garrett Wangsness of Albert Lea, 3-2, in the wrestlebacks. At 126, Michael fell 7-0 to undefeated St. Cloud Apollo junior Mitch Bengtson. In the wrestlebacks, he beat Brandon Peters of Faribault 3-1 in overtime.

James takes on Nate Mittag of Willmar in this morning’s consolation semifinals. Michael faces Devin Wolf of Irondale.

Tyler Isaacson lost twice Friday night at 138 pounds. He fell 12-4 to Adam Hammer of Osseo, then was eliminated with a 4-2 defeat to Brenden Olevson of Chanhassen.

Mike Urban’s tournament also came to an end. He was pinned by Albert Lea’s Trey Hable in the first round, then lost 4-1 to Levi Rubin of Brainerd.
