Deadlines are drawing near for nominations to a pair of Hall of Fames in the Forest Lake School District.

Saturday, March 24 is the deadline for nominations for the 2012 Forest Lake Area Schools Hall of Fame and the Forest Lake High School Athletic Hall of Fame. The latter Hall of Fame is being revived after 17 years of inactivity and will include nominations for former Ranger athletes and for the first time former coaches at the high school.

“This year, following up on the great success of the district Hall of Fame, Forest Lake High School will be revamping its Athletics Hall of Fame and plans are underway to induct new members this spring,” said Superintendent Linda Madsen.

Last year’s first district hall of fame class totaled 66 former students, staff members and community members. Individuals named to both honor groups this spring will be recognized at the Forest Lake High School Activities Award Program on Monday, June 4.

School District
Hall of Fame

Nominees to the Hall of Fame must be individuals who are former students, former staff members, or current or former members of the district’s community. They should be individuals who have made great contributions to the school district, either through their work in the district as a student, teacher, school board member, administrator or other staff member, or volunteer, or individuals who have brought honor and pride to the district through their professional work or other community service.

All nominees who are former students must have graduated from Forest Lake Area Schools prior to 2010.

Anyone can nominate someone for the Hall of Fame, and self-nominations will also be accepted. To nominate someone, applications forms and more information can be found at http://www.forestlake.k12.mn.us.

Application forms are also available at the District Office Building, 6100 N. 210th St., Forest Lake.

Mailed forms should be sent in care of Brian Tolzmann, Chair, Hall of Fame Selection Committee, Forest Lake Area Schools, 6100 N. 210th St., Forest Lake, MN 55025. Forms may also be dropped off at the district office building.

Tolzmann will head a review committee that will consider all nominations submitted by the March 24th deadline.

Athletic Hall of Fame

The renewal of the athletic hall of fame at the high school comes with a new process similar to the district hall of fame. It is also adding nominations for former coaches who will be recognized. There have been no inductions since 1995.

These individuals must be former students who participated in athletics while attending Forest Lake High School, who graduated from the high school a minimum of 10 years prior to his or her nomination, and who have exemplified behavior that is a credit to the high school and community.

Other criteria that the selection committee will use as “guidelines” for induction into the Hall of Fame will include:

a) if the athlete was selected as an all-state, all-district, all region, all-area, or all-conference athlete, whether they were a first-, second- or third-team selection, or honorable mention, and how many times they received these types of honors, and/or;

b) if the athlete was a participant in one or more state tournaments and if they ever placed as a top six medalist at state, and/or;

c) if the athlete was a statistical leader or record-holder at Forest Lake High School, or at the conference, region, state or national level, and/or;

d) if the athlete earned a most valuable player award or was named a team captain for any of their respective sports teams.

The committee also may take into account, as a qualification for induction, whether the athlete has contributed to society in a positive or negative way following graduation from Forest Lake High School.

Coach Nominations

These individuals must be former coaches who have either retired or moved on to new positions. They must have coached a minimum of seven years prior to their nomination.

Other criteria that the selection committee will use as “guidelines” for induction into the Hall of Fame will include:

a) if the coach led his or her team to a conference, region, section or state championship, and/or;

b) if the coach led his or her team, or an athlete on his or her team, to participation in a state tournament, and/or;

c) if the coach retired or left their position with an overall winning percentage at Forest Lake of better than 50 percent, and/or;

d) if the coach earned a conference, regional, sectional, state or national coaching award, and/or;

e) if the coach was instrumental in developing and building a successful athletics program, and/or;

f) if the coach demonstrated exceptional leadership, character, and athletic coaching achievement that was a credit to the Forest Lake High School and community.
