NLA falls in second round
Huskies finish 14-11 in third season
A second-round loss ended the season of the North Lakes Academy basketball boys, but not before the Huskies put together the best season in their three-year existence.
NLA beat Math & Science Academy in the first round of the Section 4A playoffs on March 5 to earn its 14th win of the year. Christopher Rosencrantz scored 27 points and Derek Beatty had 23 as the Huskies pulled out a close 76-73 victory.
Led by 63 points from seniors Desmond Williams, Darrion Scott and Deonte Blakemore, FAIR Academy routed NLA 101-36 on March 8.
“FAIR is an outstanding team led by eight seniors,” said NLA coach Judd Yaeger. “They showed how far we still have to go in order to be competitive in this section.”
Rosencrantz scored 21 points to lead NLA, which held an 8-7 lead before FAIR began rolling.
The Huskies finished the season with a record of 14-11 and built on the momentum earned last winter from their first playoff victory. Yaeger expects next year to be even better, as the team loses just one senior, Nic Harrington, and will have 11 returning lettermen.
“Last year I tried to keep games in the 30s and low 40s,” Yaeger said. “This year we picked up the pace a bit, averaging 55 points per game. Next year, I look to speed us up a bit more as we gain a year of experience and shooting ability…We will be experienced as a whole for the first time ever.”
