Fresh off an appearance at the state meet, two Ranger nordic skiers went to Utah last week to compete at the Junior Nationals competition at Soldier Hollow Resort. Rocci Wohlk and Cassie Thobe each raced in several events spanning six days.

Thobe, a senior, skied in the division for girls ages 16-17. Wohlk, a ninth-grader, competed in the age 14-15 division.

Wohlk started the week with a classic-technique sprint event on Monday. She qualified for the finals and took eighth place.

The freestyle competition took place on Wednesday. Wohlk placed 14th out of 61 racers in her division’s 5K with a time of 14:27. Thobe’s race covered 10K, and she placed 56th out of 80 with a time of 34:22.

The classical race took place on Friday. Wohlk took 19th out of 65 with a time of 16:13, while Thobe finished 61st out of 85 in 16:48.

The week ended with a 3x3K relay race. Wohlk’s team placed third of 19. Thobe’s took eighth out of 24. Both Wohlk and Thobe skied their relay leg in seven minutes flat.

The Forest Lake skiers helped the Midwest Team place fourth out of 10.

Wohlk competed for Sisu Ski Club. She earned All-American honors for her finish in the classical sprint and the 3x3K relay and was named the Midwest Team’s rookie of the year. Thobe competed for Nordicwerks Ski Klubb, which is run by Ranger head coach Deno Johnson.
