FL earns pair of runner-up finishes
The Forest Lake boys’ golf team is two meets into the season and it has two runner-up finishes under its belt. The results are especially encouraging considering each event had a field of 20 teams.
Most recently, the Rangers came up seven shots shy of champion Hastings at the Blaine Invitational at TPC Twin Cities this Monday. Forest Lake shot 335, finishing directly in front of Section 7AAA rivals Elk River (338) and Andover (340). Section member Duluth East took fifth with 344 strokes.
On a day in which baseball and softball games were postponed, the golfers played on through hostile conditions.
“We weren’t able to dodge the doubles, triples and quads in the wind, sleet, snow and in the ’20s wind chill,” said coach John Buck.
Only four golfers in the whole field broke 80. Osseo’s Dalton Charboneau took medalist honors with a six-over round of 78.
Forest Lake junior Trevor Thompson tied for eighth with 81. Senior Taylor Bisbee carded 83. Junior Max Kelly, the defending state champion, took a quadruple bogey on the final hole and finished with 84. Sophomore Daniel Massey closed the scoring with a round of 87.
Sophomore Jake Moryn (89) and senior Zach Dickenson (92) also participated.
The Rangers also played in tough circumstances to open the season at the Park Invitational at River Oaks Golf Club in Cottage Grove last Thursday. Fast greens and strong wind gusts led to high scores all around.
Forest Lake limited the damage and shot 324 to finish six shots behind the frontrunners from Shattuck-St. Mary’s.
Kelly paced the Rangers with a round of 78. Bisbee (80), Thompson (81) and Dickenson (85) also saw their scores count. Massey (91) and senior Brad Rod (92) rounded out the lineup.
The Suburban East Conference season got underway this Tuesday in North Oaks. Two invitationals are on deck this week. Blaine hosts another meet, this time at Bunker Hills on Thursday. The Brainerd Invitational at The Preserve is set for Friday. The White Bear Lake Invitational will take place Monday at Dellwood Hills Golf Club.
