Teachers have tentative agreement on new contract

Teachers in the Forest Lake School District have a tentative agreement with the ISD 831 School Board for a new two-year contract covering the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 school years. Agreement was reached following a 15-hour bargaining session in St. Paul with the Bureau of Mediation Services on Tuesday, May 1.

Details on the proposed contract have not been released. FLEA President Tony Harris said the union has commenced the process of updating members on the terms of the proposed agreement. A membership vote date has not been set.

Linda Madsen, superintendent of schools, said she would update the full school board during its regular meeting on Thursday night, May 3. Board members Dan Kieger, Kathy Bystrom and Erin Turner were in attendance during the mediation session in St. Paul along with district administrators Madsen and Larry Martini, director of business services.

If teachers ratify the proposal in early May, the school board could take action to ratify the agreement at its second monthly session on Thursday, May 17 which is committee meeting night. The school board will meet again in regular session on Thursday, May 31 for its June meeting night.

Even while a school board member I never understood why these contacts need to be kept a secret while in negotiation. It is fully understandable why the board meets in private to discuss negotiations and fully understand why the unions meet in private to discuss their side of the negotiations. What’s wrong with showing the public the deal each side brings forward and having a transparent process?

Because nobody really cares or wants to meddle in this anymore than anyone cares what you get to work at your pseudo “college”
