Hegseth 3rd in bid for Senate nomination

Former Forest Lake resident Pete Hegseth, now of Stillwater, fell short last weekend in his bid for the Republican endorsement to run for the United States Senate this fall. Hegseth, 31, finished third in the three-way endorsement race won by state Rep. Kurt Bills of Rosemount. Bills will now face DFL U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar. Former State Rep. Dan Severson of Sauk Rapids finished second in the endorsement race at the state convention in St. Cloud last weekend. Bills, 42, teaches economics and government at Rosemount High School and was elected to the House in 2010. Hegseth, a former head of the Vets for Freedom national organization, returned to Minnesota after a tour of duty with the Army in Afghanistan and announced his election plans. The Princeton University graduate also served in Iraq.
