Section softball champs riding high into state

FL completes drive for five in impressive fashion

Forest Lake didn’t just win the Section 7AAA softball tournament – it destroyed it. The Rangers crushed Duluth Denfeld 10-0 in Thursday’s title game, capping a jaw-dropping tournament performance. The team won its fifth straight section title by outscoring its opponents 39-2 over four games.

Though the game was being played in Forest Lake, Rangers won a coin flip and chose to play the title game as visitors, and they quickly took the lead with two first-inning runs. Jenn Zidar launched a two-run homer in the third to make it 4-0. Forest Lake added two more in the fourth, and Mikayla Watters hit a two-run double in the fifth to make it 8-0. She also had an RBI single as part of a two-run seventh.

Michelle LaCasse pitched the first five innings and Micah McGuiness the last two.

Forest Lake (23-1) will face Orono in the first round of the state tournament at 11 a.m. next Thursday in North Mankato. The Spartans, also 23-1, are Section 6AAA champs.

Congratulations to the Team and the Coaches. Going to 5 straight State Tournaments is High praise for a program that started with meager beginings. It is no fluke that the success of the program started years ago and has maintained a high quality of “Feeder” programs. Coaches and players start with a commitment as far back as the grade school years.

Other sport programs at the High School could surely use the model that the Varsity Coaches started. This is truely a sport that will stand the test of time.
