A teen with Forest Lake ties took home a title at the New Brighton Triathlon over the first weekend in June.

It’s the first triathlon victory for Dylan Gillespie, a 2011 Forest Lake High School graduate.

“I was really surprised, but I did train hard for it so I was expecting something good to come out of it,” he said.

Gillespie won the sprint triathlon event with a personal best time of 1:06:30. The FLHS record-holding swimmer put his background in the pool to good use in New Brighton, emerging first out of the water after the half-mile swim which opened the race. He maintained his lead over a 14-mile bike ride and a 3-mile run to earn the championship trophy and medal.

The 19-year-old has competed in about 10 sprint triathlons but is still relatively new to the sport. He has several age-group victories under his belt and plans to step up to the half-Ironman level next summer.

Gillespie lives in Bozeman, MT and figures that training in that elevation helped him win the race here. Up next is a sprint triathlon July 29 in Bozeman.

Besides working and training for triathlons, he also teaches a master’s swimming club and is a volunteer firefighter.
