One final honor for a World War II vet

As American Legion Post 225 prepares for its annual Fourth of July celebration, there are other functions that do not go unfinished. The Post 225 rifle squad was at Calvary Cemetery in Forest Lake on Friday, June 22 for the graveside service of Robert “Bob” Valenty, a Forest Lake native who served in World War II and later returned to spend nearly 20 years running businesses in Forest Lake. It was a time for one final honor. The rifle salute was followed by the presentation of the casket flag to family members by Post 225 member El Ewert. By tradition, a shell casing is tucked inside the folded flag and it is presented to the family on behalf of the president of the United States. Another World War II vet, Ed Hinrichs, will serve as parade grand marshal on July 4. Honorary grand marshals are fellow World War II vets Pete Pohl and Harold Lang. (Photo by Cliff Buchan)
