Fairview Auxiliary awards record 17 scholarships
It was a historic day June 12 when the Fairview Lakes Auxiliary awarded 17 scholarships to students pursuing a health care career. The event marked the 50th year that health care scholarships have been awarded since the Chisago Lakes Hospital Auxiliary presented its first nursing scholarship in 1962.
The recipient of that scholarship, Cathy Warndahl Carlson, was in attendance as an honored guest. She expressed gratitude to the auxiliary for the $500 scholarship which covered half of her $1,000 tuition, room and board for the three-year nursing program that she completed.
Also honored during the evening were three student volunteers who received the Donna Mathias Student Service Award: Krista Kirchner, Megan Pignato and Rachel Dupre.
This year, the following health care scholarships were awarded:
Albrecht Family Scholarship
This is the sixth year that the Albrecht family has sponsored a $1,000 scholarship in memory of Dr. Harold Albrecht, the first chief of staff of the former Chisago Lakes Hospital, and his wife Joyce, a volunteer and hospital hostess for 35 years. The Albrecht scholarship is awarded to a student enrolled in a post-secondary accredited health career program.
This year’s recipient, Nicholas Sausen, son of Joe and Geri Sausen of North Branch, is a graduate of North Branch High School and the University of Minnesota. Currently a student at the University of Minnesota Medical School, Nick plans to be a pediatric or emergency physician.
Love Lights Scholarships
Presented by the Fairview Lakes Auxiliary, these scholarships are funded through the annual Love Lights Tree Lighting program held in December. Three Lovelights Scholarships were presented. Recipients are:
Jill Sontag, daughter of Steven and Lisa Sontag of Shafer. Jill is a graduate of Chisago Lakes High School where she worked with Fairview Lakes’ staff as a student athletic trainer. Jill is majoring in athletic training with a minor in psychology at the University of Wisconsin at LaCrosse.
Tina Marie Letourneau lives in Shafer with her husband Garnet. Tina graduated from Forest Lake High School and is pursuing a nursing degree at Century College.
Laura Monson, a 2012 graduate of Chisago Lakes High School, is the daughter of Kevin and Karen Monson of Lindstrom. Laura completed the Fairview-sponsored Introduction to Health care class at Chisago Lakes High School and will begin her studies at Minnesota State University at Mankato.
Fairview Lakes Medical Center Scholarships
Fairview Lakes Medical Center presented two $1,000 scholarships to students pursuing a career in health care. Recipients are:
Haley Schmidt, the daughter of Kami Schmidt, Pine City, plans to become a pediatrician. A second-time scholarship recipient. Haley has completed her freshmen year and will return this fall to St. Olaf College.
Amanda Angel, daughter of Todd and Terri Angel of Taylors Falls, graduated from Chisago Lakes High School in 2011 and last year received the Ken Shea scholarship. Amanda has completed her freshman year at the University of Minnesota where she also completed the post-secondary enrollment option while still in high school. She plans to pursue a career as a general practice physician.
Leah Hillesheim Scholarships
Awarded annually in honor of the former administrator of District Memorial Hospital, Forest Lake, the scholarships are funded by the Fairview Lakes Auxiliary from money raised through the annual Bike, Walk, Run and Roll event. Leah Hillesheim and her family participate. All funds raised through this project are returned to the community in the form of scholarships. This year five $1,000. scholarships were awarded. Recipients are:
Jessica Edmond, a graduate of Forest Lake High School and Concordia College in Moorhead, who lives in Chisago City with her husband Troy. Jessie has decided to return to school to seek a nursing degree. She is enrolled at Century College and plans to work as a pediatric nurse.
Kaonoukatee Vue, a 2012 graduate of Forest Lake High School and the daughter of Va Lue Vue and Der Vang of Forest Lake, also completed the Introduction to Health Care course while at Forest Lake High School. She will attend Winona State University this fall pursuing a nursing degree.
Danica Schellbach, a 2012 Rush City High school graduate and the daughter of Dana and Joey Schellbach. Danica plans to become a neonatal nurse. She will attend St. Scholastica College in Duluth to pursue a nursing degree.
Samantha Cole, daughter of Kathleen Cole, Scandia, graduated from Forest Lake High School and went on to study at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and Marquette University. A graduate student at the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire, Samantha is very close to obtaining her major in speech pathology.
Amy Odendahl, daughter of Brian and Sue Odendahl and a 2011 graduate of Pine City High School, is a student at the University of Wisconsin at Madison where she is pursuing a degree as a pediatric physical therapist.
Cindy Lynch Scholarships
Two scholarships in honor of the late Cindy Lynch, a former RN at both District Memorial Hospital and Fairview Lakes Medical Center, were presented by her husband Mike. The scholarships are given to adults returning to school to pursue and advance their health care careers. Recipients are:
Jeannette Wallen, Wyoming, a histology lab technician since 2000 at Hennepin County Medical Center and currently at Minnesota Gastroenterology. Jeannette is enrolled in the nursing program at Century College.
A second-time scholarship recipient, Brenda Smith completed the Licensed Practical Nursing program at Pine Technical College and is how enrolled in the bachelors-in-nursing program. Brenda lives in Stacy with her husband and two children.
Donald Ferguson Scholarship
The $1,000 scholarship in memory of former Chisago Lakes Hospital Administrator Donald Ferguson, is given annually to a student pursuing a health care career and living in the Fairview Lakes Health Care region.
Recipient Emma Jindra, daughter of John and Mary Ann Jindra of Chisago City. is a graduate of Chisago Lakes High School. Emma completed her undergraduate work at the University of St. Thomas and is entering her second year as a pharmacy student at the University of Minnesota.
Virginia Elizabeth Ferguson Scholarship
The $1,000 Virginia Elizabeth Ferguson Scholarship, awarded to a Chisago Lakes High School student who plans to pursue a nursing or another health care career, went to Kailee Carlson, daughter of Tim Carlson and Cynthia Carlson-Paetznick of Chisago City. Kailee will attend Gustavus Adolphus College in St Peter planning to enroll in the nursing program.
Ken Shea Scholarship
For the fifth year, North Metro Anesthesia presented a $1,000 scholarship in memory of long-time nurse-anesthetist, Ken Shea to a student pursuing a medical career. John Kramer from North Metro Anesthesia presented the Ken Shea Scholarship to Katelynn Pearson, daughter of Tim and Angela Pearson. A 2012 graduate of Forest Lake High School, Katelynn will begin her studies to become an anesthesiologist at the University of Minnesota.
Carl and Victoria Lindberg Scholarship
A $1,000 scholarship presented annually to a student from the Chisago Lakes, Wyoming or North Branch area, this scholarship is given by the Lindberg family in memory of Carl and Victoria, long-time residents of the Chisago Lakes Community.
This year’s recipient is Angela Pechaver, an admissions financial representative at Fairview Lakes Medical Center who lives in Lindstrom with her two children. Angela is enrolled at Kaplan University where she is seeking a degree in medical office management.
