Post 4210 goes 3-0 in first-time event
After a slow start to the season, the Forest Lake VFW baseball squad is on a roll. Post 4210 ran its winning streak to six over the weekend and won the championship of its own tournament in doing so. The boys went 3-0 from Friday to Sunday to take the title of the first-year, eight-team event at Schumacher Field.
“The key in any baseball game is to pitch well, and we had great starting pitching,” said coach Kale Henry.
Forest Lake opened the weekend with a 14-3 rout of Arlington on Friday. Danny Wassman picked up the win and was supported by an eight-run fifth inning.
“We got a hit, a walk, a bleeder fell in and pretty soon everything started dropping in,” Henry said.
Forest Lake trailed 2-1 going into the fifth inning of Saturday’s matchup with Chaska. A squeeze bunt by Skyler Winning plated the tying run, and the Rangers added three runs in the sixth to win 5-3.
“Brett Gravelle pitched a great game for us,” Henry said. “He kept them off-balance and they’re a good-hitting team.”
In Sunday’s title game it was Tim Yaritz’s turn to shine on the mound. He stuck out six and walked one in a complete-game effort against Elk River. Post 4210 won 5-1 to claim the title. Grayson Stout had two hits.
“It was a fun weekend,” Henry said. “Everyone on the roster had a chance to play and contribute to help win some baseball games.”
The VFW squad is now 9-6 on the season. It heads to Anoka on Sunday, Champlin Park next Tuesday and hosts Cambridge-Isanti for a doubleheader next Wednesday.
