Post 225 team starts season 5-2
Sauer key in Legion squad’s wins over Oakdale
Forest Lake won two out of three games in American Legion baseball action last week. The Post 225 squad took two games from Oakdale after falling to Inver Grove Heights and is now 5-2 on the season.
Most recently, the Rangers beat Oakdale 7-5 on Sunday at Tartan High School. Forest Lake trailed 5-3 in the sixth inning until Phil Sauer cranked a three-run homer.
Joe Vacinek got the win in relief of Trent Rabel. He came in with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth and limited Oakdale to one run. Noah Brown recorded the final two outs to pick up the save.
Forest Lake stranded six runners over the first three innings. Beau Fandel had two doubles.
Post 225 also topped Oakdale 2-1 at home last Thursday. Sauer hurled a complete game in an efficient manner, throwing just over 73 pitches. Oakdale errors helped Forest Lake as it scored one run in the fifth and one in the sixth.
The week started Wednesday on the wrong side of a 4-0 contest at home. Inver Grove Heights limited Forest Lake to three hits in a game that remained scoreless until the fifth inning.
“[Starter] Jack Schmidt gave us a chance, but we never put any serious pressure on them,” said coach Valdie Magstadt.
The 12-man roster features several key members of the Forest Lake varsity squad, though none of the 2012 graduates. Matt Schmidt, a 2011 grad, is also on the team.
Post 225 hosted Stillwater for a doubleheader this Tuesday and hosted Burnsville this Wednesday. Home doubleheaders with Woodbury Blue and West St. Paul are on tap for Sunday and Monday.
