Hay Lake Day celebration this Saturday, August 11

Learn about how school used to be at this year’s Hay Lake Day celebration on Saturday, August 11.

The Hay Lake School Museum in Scandia, operated by the Washington County Historical Society, will host their annual Hay Lake Day celebration Saturday, Aug. 11 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.  Admission is free and all ages are welcome.

At this rural one-room schoolhouse, visitors can see how pioneer Swedish immigrant children went to school, how they were taught, and the games they played more than a century ago.

There will be Swedish and other traditional craft vendors, live music by the Scandia Community Band, a bake sale, food and drink for sale, raffle drawings and free tours of both the school and the Johannes Erickson log home.

Kids who come dressed in their best pioneer outfit will be eligible for a prize.  They can try a game of jacks, jump rope and other activities that students enjoyed when the school had 8 grades.

Both the school and log home are on the National Register of Historic Places.

The museum is located on the corner of CR-3 and Old Marine Trail N, just south of downtown Scandia.
