Forest Lake Relay for Life teams raised $130,000 for the American Cancer Society at their 19th annual event that began Friday evening, Aug. 4. The goal this year was $112,000.

Miss Teen International Abigale Bodene, a biochemistry major at the University of Minnesota–Morris, spoke about breast cancer awareness.

Stage manager Carna Brandt read the speech prepared by Nikki Pierson about her six-year-old son Gavin’s cancer journey. Gavin was recovering from a 14-hour surgery.

Cancer survivors walked the first lap of the relay led by a bagpiper and marked by the release of doves.

The relay closed early because of a storm that blew through in the early morning.

Event sponsors included the Forest Lake Masonic Lodge, University of MN Physicians Radiation Treatment Center, Fairview Lakes Medical Center, the Forest Lake Lions, Lia Sophia advisor Sacha Pankrantz, and the Catherine Sorgaard Memorial.

A total of 264 people participated, including 22 teams and over 100 survivors.
