XC girls make splash in opener
FL wins 19-team Extreme Meet in WI
The Forest Lake cross-country girls opened the season with a victory at the River Falls (WI) Extreme Meet last Thursday. The Rangers topped 18 squads, including runner-up Wausau West (WI).
Eighth-grader Allie Bartlett placed fourth overall and ninth-grader Emma Benner came in ninth.
“We had a number of exceptional performances, particularly with newcomers Abbie Asperheim and Izzy Leininger, both eighth-graders,” said coach Eric Kaluza.
The race hosted by UW-River Falls boasts a peculiar course that includes several river crossings. The unique format also makes it dangerous to extract meaning from the results; Forest Lake treats the race much like a scrimmage. The Rangers placed fourth last year in their first time participating at the meet.
The JV squad last week was the first Minnesota school to finish and placed third overall. Seventh-graders Caroline Schoessow, Jenna Parent and Mikayla Niderkern posted top-15 finishes for the JV.
Forest Lake will get a better feel for its standing this fall at the Dakota County Challenge this Friday at Eagan High School. Top-ranked Lakeville South and the fourth-ranked hosts join No. 11 Forest Lake in the field.
