Huskies pound competition at Columbia Heights
The varsity volleyball team from North Lakes Academy won the gold division at a tournament in Columbia Heights this past weekend.
The Huskies opened the weekend with a 25-11, 25-13 victory over the Fine Arts and Interdisciplinary Resource (FAIR) school. In NLA’s next two matches, the Huskies suffered two tough losses to West Lutheran and Minneapolis
Patrick Henry/Minneapolis North. In gold division play, North Lakes first took on Minneapolis Edison. Despite losing freshman middle hitter Ashley Millerbernd to a sprained ankle, the Huskies went on to a 25-22, 25-15 two-game sweep of the Minneapolis team. Contributing to the win was freshman Katie Alamo, who filled in for Millerbernd in the middle position halfway through the second set.
During the final match of gold division, the Huskies went up against Minneapolis Roosevelt for the division title. NLA controlled the match from the beginning with solid serving and a strong attack on its way to a 25-19, 25-22 victory.
“I was really proud of the girls today, with senior captain Kirsten Thiele being unavailable today,” North Lakes Academy head coach Jeff Beimert said. “It was a great team effort with all 12 girls contributing to help us bring home the trophy.”
This was the first tournament trophy won by the Huskies in the volleyball program’s five-year history. The squad’s 5-3 overall record also represents the program’s most victories in a season, and most of the schedule remains.
