LILA has ‘Very Special Teacher’

Lakes International Language Academy teacher Jenni Muras

Who’s that leading the school assembly in the latest hip hop dance moves? Passing out high fives to kindergarteners on the first day of school? And motivating students to try a new sport?

It’s Jenni Muras, a teacher at Lakes International Language Academy (LILA) and one of five teachers from throughout North America selected as winners of Haworth, Inc.’s Very Special Teacher appreciation contest.

Haworth, a designer and manufacturer of office furniture and workspaces, sponsored the contest to recognize teachers who combine knowledge, talent, and passion to inspire and empower people.

Each winning teacher received a makeover of his or her school’s teacher lounge, including Haworth chairs and tables.

Haworth officials visited LILA on Sept. 19 to celebrate the installation of the new furnishings and present Jenni with her award.

“We have a very hardworking and talented staff,” LILA Director Cam Hedlund said,  but “there’s something about Jenni’s zest for life, learning and teaching that expands our idea of ‘possible.’”

Assistant Director Shannon Peterson added, “Jenni helps us all step outside our comfort zones and follow our hearts. And she’s the only person I know who, when asked the dimensions of the gym, does a number of forward rolls across the room and multiplies by her height!”

Profé Jenni, as she likes to be called, teaches physical education in Spanish and Mandarin Chinese at LILA.

In one of her many accomplishments, she wrote a successful grant to incorporate dance into the school’s curriculum as a way to differentiate instruction and connect with learners through music and movement.

Family-owned and privately held, Haworth is headquartered in Michigan and sells in 170 countries through a global network of 600 dealers. In 2011 the company had net sales of $1.38 billion.
