A couple from Forest Lake died while canoeing in the Boundary Waters over the weekend.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office responded Sunday to a report of a capsized canoe and two bodies floating on Alton Lake, near Tofte, Minn.

The deceased were identified as Thomas Pineault, 55, and Cynthia Pineault, 51.

Authorities believe the canoe capsized on Saturday at the latest. The Pineaults were both wearing life vests, and no foul play is suspected. High winds and cool conditions made for difficult canoeing conditions, the sheriff’s office noted.

The report was called in at approximately 12:40 p.m. on Sunday. Assisting the Cook County Sheriff’s Office with the reponse  was Cook County Search and Rescue, Minnesota State Patrol, United States Forest Service and Sawbill Outfitters.

Alton Lake is part of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, northwest of Sawbill Lake.
