Washington County offers several foster care options to accommodate busy schedules, concerns about compensation, and the desire to work with a certain age group.
Families are needed to open their homes to school-age children needing a temporary place to live. Placements vary in length.
Foster providers become part of the agency team that works closely to meet the child’s needs, eventually reuniting the family or finding permanency for the child.
There is also a great need for caring and supportive foster parents for teenagers. Foster providers gain new skills in relating to people as they nurture teenagers and help them become more independent.
Parenting a teen is challenging, but has many rewards–most importantly, the satisfaction of making a difference in someone’s life.
A third option, the Respite Program, is set up to give families a needed break by providing care for children and teenagers with or without disabilities for a few days or a weekend. This can take as little as one weekend a month.
In addition to meeting state licensing requirements, foster families should be able to provide a stable family atmosphere (one- or two-parent home), positive attitude, adequate housing (house or apartment), and love and support for the children or adults in their care.
Before being licensed, families must undergo a thorough background check.
Meetings are held in Lower Level Conference Room 16 in the Washington County Government Center, 14949 62nd St. N., Stillwater. Use parking Lot A on the south side and check in with the security guard.
