The Hardwood Creek Regional Trail will receive improvements via funds from the Metropolitan Council. A pair of grants will help pay for the extension, construction and repair of the bituminous surface of the trail, which runs from Hugo north to the Chisago County line. The work will also extend the trail’s southern end from County Road 8 (Frenchman Road) to 140th Street in Hugo. The trail is 10 miles long and experiences heavy use. Cracks and potholes have begun to appear in many areas. The project will include the addition of amenities such as landscaping, benches, kiosks and signage. A Metropolitan Council grant of $794,000 from the state parks and trails fund from the state sales tax and $612,000 from a federal grant will pay for the $1.4 million project. The Washington County Board of Commissioners accepted the grants Oct. 9.
