New drop-off for recycling compact fluorescent bulbs

Heinen Hardware and Rental has joined with Mercury Technologies of Minnesota to recycle fluorescent lamps, for a small fee, to area residents and small businesses.  The service is free for Xcel Energy customers.

Minnesota requires that spent fluorescent lamps be recycled because they contain small amounts of mercury.

If fluorescent lamps are placed in household trash, mercury is released to the environment from waste incinerators or landfills, eventually falling to earth when it rains. This has a broad and long-lasting effect, as mercury contamination lasts for generations.

Bring spent lamps to Heinen at 1467 Lake Street S. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For the fee schedule call 651-464-6474.
