The Forest Lake girls’ hockey team traveled north to open its season on Saturday with a 2-0 section win over Cloquet-Esko-Carlton.
Both scores for the Rangers came in the first period. Ninth-grader Kaitlyn VanTassel scored at 1:42 with an assist from ninth-grader Madi Nolan to take the early lead.
Junior Alexa Bremer fired one in five minutes later with assists from sophomore Kayla Brust and junior Becca Neumann to complete the scoring for Forest Lake.
This is the first time the Rangers have beaten the Lumberjacks in more than eight years, including a 4-0 loss during the first round of Section 7AA playoffs to end the Forest Lake season last winter with an overall record of 5-18-3.
The Rangers faced St. Francis/North Branch at home on Tuesday night, and will face Duluth Denfeld at 7:30 p.m. tonight, Nov. 15 in front of the Forest Lake homecrowd.
