Scandia/Marine Lions serve breakfast at food drive

Carson Graves of Lino Lakes, age 5, talks with Santa and his elf at the Scandia/Marine Lions breakfast.

More than 400 people ate scrambled eggs and ham at the Scandia/Marine Lions Club free community breakfast on Saturday, Dec. 8.

In return, guests brought in three pick-up loads of non-perishable items for the Elim food shelf and purchased Lions coupon books.

Coupon Books

The 2013 coupon books feature advertising and special deals from local merchants.

Nurseries have buy-one-get-one plant offers. There are free skate sharpenings and discounted bike tune-ups.

Of the 101 coupons, 59 have an offer that is repeated each month. These include restaurants in Scandia, Chisago City, Wyoming, Lindstrom, Center City and Forest Lake.

The $20 coupon book can be purchased from any Lion. Proceeds benefit Scandia/Marine Lions community projects.

In both 2009 and 2010, the Scandia/Marine Lions gave away more than $35,000.

Scandia received $7,500 for skateboard park equipment in 2009.

In 2010, 19 students received $500 scholarships. Every year, third graders receive dictionaries.

The list is an interesting read, given the large number of recipients (more than 50 per year) and the wide range of causes, from a lift chair to a marching band.

The Lions meet at the Scandia Community Center on the second Thursday of each month for breakfast at 8 a.m. and on the fourth Thursday of each month for dinner at 6:30 p.m.

The membership fee of $150 per year pays for the meals plus international and district Lions dues.
