Rangers lose to White Bear Lake in first home dual

Forest Lake was overpowered by the Bears on the mat on Thursday with a 42-24 home loss to White Bear Lake.

The Rangers suffered a slow start during the first four duals and remained down 12 at 24-12 midway through the dual.

Three Rangers took down their opponents for pins, starting with eighth-grader Grant Brown at the 113-pound weight class over JP Powell. Sophomore Luke McCord put up a good fight against Andy Martin at 120 pounds, but lost to the No. 10-ranked wrestler.

Senior captain Austin Boniface, ranked No. 7 in Class AAA, pinned Gregg Wilcox at 48 seconds for another six points at 160 while sophomore Joe Rydell pinned Matt Orloske for another six points at the 182-pound weight class to bring the Rangers within six at 24-30.
But Rydell’s win would be the last points for the Rangers, as the three remaining upper weights fell.

Other individual Forest Lake wins included No. 1-ranked sophomore James Pleski with a 13-7 decision at 132 and senior captain Andrew Meyers in the 138-pound weight class with a 6-1 win in sudden death. Meyers is currently ranked No. 9 in state.

With a record of 0-1 in dual meets, Forest Lake sits at No. 9 in Class AAA and third in Section 7AAA behind No. 2 St. Michael-Albertville and No. 8 Coon Rapids.

The Rangers take on Mounds View at home tonight, Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m.
