Girls’ hockey on to state

The Rangers will take part in the girls’ hockey state tournament for the first time since 2001. Forest Lake, the top seed in Section 7AA, pulled off a 3-2 victory over Elk River-Zimmerman in Thursday night’s section championship game in Blaine.

The Elks set the tone for an exciting matchup by scoring just over a minute into the game, but Ranger eighth-grader Kaitlyn VanTassel tied it up off a rebound soon after for the power play score.

In the second period, Enrooth came charging out of the penalty box minutes later to add to a Ranger lead by scoring on a one-on-one breakaway to go ahead by one.

Junior Alexa Bremer would add a power play goal in the third to give Forest Lake the cushion it needed when an Elk River goal snuck through halfway through the third period.

The state tourney opens next Thursday, Feb. 22 at the Xcel Energy Arena in St. Paul.
