During the summer of 1976 he was driving a city bus in south Minneapolis when a stray bullet came through his window and lodged behind his left eye. He lost sight in that eye, which ended his bus driving career.

In 1980, Harold and his family moved to Tarpon Springs, Fl. and later returned to Forest Lake in January of 1982. In 1990 Harold and Marie moved to Harris and lived there until 2010 when they moved to Birchwood Arbors Assisted Living.
