Spaghetti on menu this Saturday at FL VFW
After a highly successful fund drive in 2012, Northwoods Humane Society will cook up its first local effort to raise funds in 2013.
It’s called “Meatballs for Mutts” and the spaghetti dinner is being served from 4-7 p.m., Saturday, March 16 at VFW Post 4210, 556 SW 12th St. The dinner marks the third annual function hosted by the Forest Lake club.
“It’s been a good event for us,” said Brenda Farr Zelinka, executive director of the animal shelter located on US-8 in Wyoming just outside Forest Lake.
The director said the 2012 appeal to the public through a special capital fund drive to keep the doors open far exceeded goals.
“We ended [the financial year] in the black which was phenomenal, “ she said. The capital fund drive brought in $175,000 in general donations last year far exceeding the roughly $50,000 collected in 2011, she said.
The 2012 drive last July sought $60,000 in new donations to stabilize the shelter, Farr Zelinka said.
Last year’s drive also sought new blood to help run the shelter. New board members were sought and as 2013 opened, seven of the nine board members are new volunteers.
John Harington, Stacy, is the new board president, replacing Jack Felix who held the role for many years.
After the strong fund drive last year, Farr Zelinka says the board and staff will remain vigilant in carrying out the Northwoods mission to rescue stray and abandoned dogs and cats. “There is still a lot of work to do,” she said.
Saturday’s “Meatballs for Mutts” event is a starting point, she said.
The spaghetti and meatball dinner is $7 a plate. The mean will include breadstick, dinner salad and dessert and ala carte beverages. All proceeds will go to Northwoods thanks to the sponsorship of the VFW.
A silent auction, door prizes and music will also be featured during the event.
