Rep. Bob Dettmer, R-Forest Lake and Sen. Roger Reinert, DFL-Duluth, are co-sponsoring a veterans omnibus bill they say is the first of its kind. The legislators introduced SF1278/HF1465 during the Veterans Day on the Hill event at the Capitol last week.
“In the past, veterans bills have been attached to other legislation but I believe these issues are so important that they deserve their own debate, discussion and consideration by the Legislature,” Dettmer said.
Among other issues, the bill, which has bipartisan support, will focus on: a tax credit for hiring veterans, exempting pension pay for retired vets, revising GI Bill elements, funding Minnesota honor guards, legal protections for Yellow Ribbon Initiative participants, vets license plate provisions, and rehabilitation for vets that serve honorably.
Dettmer, a veteran himself, is the minority lead on the State Government Finance & Veterans Affairs Committee.
