Two area students make geography semifinals

Sam Larsen, a fourth-grader at Scandia Elementary, and Mason Vanvleet, a sixth-grader at Wyoming Elementary, are among 100 Minnesota students who will compete at the Minnesota National Geographic Bee at St. Cloud State University on Friday, April 5.

 

After winning their elementary school bees, the boys took a qualifying test which was submitted to the National Geographic Society.

 

The state champion will win a trip to Washington, D.C. to represent Minnesota in the national finals on May 20 to 22.

 

The national winner will take home a $25,000 college scholarship.

 

On Thursday, May 23, public TV stations will air the final round of the national competition, moderated by Alex Trebek of Jeopardy.

 

The contest, in its 25th year, is sponsored by Google and Plum Creek.
