Sofia Sanchez of Forest Lake has been chosen as a state finalist in the National American Miss Minnesota Pageant. She will participate in the princess division on June 1 and 2 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Bloomington.
Sofia, age 6, is a first-grade student at Lakes International Language Academy in the Mandarin Chinese immersion program.
She was judged based on her community involvement (10 percent), personal introduction (30 percent), poise and posture/formal wear (30 percent) and interview (30 percent).
The pageant emphasizes developing self-confidence, learning good sportsmanship and setting and achieving personal goals.
Of 1,800 Minnesota girls interviewed, 125 were selected as finalists.
At the Miss Minnesota Pageant in June, Sofia will participate in the talent competition, incorporating violin with Chinese dance and song.
Sofia’s activities include tennis, softball, gymnastics and dance. She also enjoys horseback riding, crafts, and playing piano and violin. She does community service projects through her Daisy Girl Scout Troop and through St. Peter Catholic Church.
She loves animals and hopes to be a veterinarian some day.
The winner of the pageant will receive a $1,000 cash award, the official title, crown, and banner for the state of Minnesota, and air transportation to compete in the national pageant in California.
