Speech team wins section

The Forest Lake High School Speech team won the Section 7AA championship in Duluth on Wednesday, April 10.

Seven speakers will advance to the state tournament, to be held at Blaine High School on Friday, April 19.

First-place section winners, who are now headed for state, were Brandon Hilla in Poetry and Ryan Sudo in Informative.

Earning third place and a trip to state were Megan Storkan in Great Speeches, Zach Marleau in Drama, Bethany Blackmarr in Extemporaneous Reading, Jeanette Spanjers in Informative and Sarah Gould in Poetry.

Of 35 Ranger speech team entries, 18 went into the final rounds.

Schools from St. Francis, Duluth and Princeton were the other top finishers.

The Forest Lake coaches are Tim Newcomb, Becky Haven, Craig Zimanske, Tim Peterson, Zach Clasen, Bailey Parenteau and Becky Wolters.

Newcomb was recognized as Section 7AA Coach of the Year.
